ANSEP was started in 1995 with one student. Since 1995 our university has graduated more than 400 Alaska Native scientists and engineers. Nearly 300 bachelor degree-seeking students participate annually at University of Alaska campuses.

Our ANSEP University Success component is an academic learning community composed of students, faculty, staff, and external partners who are focused on the academic success as well as the personal and professional development of each student. Students are co-enrolled in classes, participate in organized study groups, have opportunities for peer and professional mentoring, do undergraduate research projects, work summer internships, and participate in planned group social activities. ANSEP students understand the importance of community and teamwork, working together to be successful.


Our goal is for each ANSEP University Success student to:

  • Be effective at working in teams and understand the importance of a supportive community/study group
  • Earn the money they need for college through internships
  • Earn scholarship support
  • Develop a network of peer mentors
  • Develop a network of professional mentors
  • Complete a research project as an undergraduate
  • Develop leadership skills by making presentations to students and professionals describing their summer internships and research projects
  • Develop leadership skills by leading recitation sessions and mentoring other students
  • Graduate with a B.S. in a STEM discipline

How it Works

In the ANSEP University Success component, students are teamed in an academic community where students supported by peers and professionals, work together for success. Many students live and study together on campus. Building a supportive peer group is a big part of why we are successful. 

ANSEP University Success students benefit from the following:

  • Weekly ANSEP Meetings:  Students are required to attend weekly team building meetings where STEM professionals describe their jobs and the opportunities available in engineering and science. Students can share their recent internship or research experiences. The sessions also provide a networking opportunity for the students with professionals, faculty, staff, and the other students.
  • Recitation Sessions: ANSEP students are required to participate in weekly study groups. Recitation Sessions are designed to strengthen skills in the gateway courses like calculus, chemistry, computer programming, and physics. Junior, Senior, and graduate students who have previously completed the course with a grade of ‘B’ or better lead the sessions. Students are required to participate and solve problems on the board and be able to explain what they are doing to the other students in the session. 
  • Co-Enrollment:  Students are co-enrolled in math and science classes so there is always another ANSEP student to attend classes and study with. 
  • Internships: Summer internships are required in order for students to earn money for school, clarify their vision of a career in science or engineering, expand their professional network, and be exposed to additional mentoring opportunities. Internships are productive for the employer and educational for the student.
  • Research:  Research opportunities are available to students through university faculty and industry partner organizations. We work to connect each of our students with undergraduate research opportunities, and foster mentoring relationships with current PhD candidates and research faculty. We encourage students to have one of their summer internships involve working with research scientists.
  • Scholarships:  Merit based scholarships are provided by many of our industrial partners. Scholarships play an important role in retention, since many of our students would otherwise be unable to overcome the financial hurdles presented by the costs of education.
  • Housing:  ANSEP students have the option to live together in the residence halls.  ANSEP students are encouraged to live and study together for success. 
  • Student Activities: Planned activities deepen the bond that is so important to student success. This includes activities like hiking, bowling, overnight camping trips, movies, rock climbing, and other activities the students choose. AISES or other professional society membership is required of all students to help them develop a network beyond the university.
  • Advising: Formal and informal advising sessions are available to all ANSEP students with faculty and professional advisors. This is particularly important for first and second year students.

Who can Join

The ANSEP University Success component is a learning community at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), Fairbanks (UAF) and Juneau (UAS) campuses.

Requirements to become an ANSEP University Success student in good standing:

  • Students must be accepted to the University of Alaska within an approved 4-year science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) degree program.
  • Students must make full-time academic progress towards their approved 4-year STEM degree (12 credit hours per semester with a C or higher in each course, while maintaining a 2.5 GPA or higher for at least two consecutive semesters).
  • Students must attend all weekly ANSEP meetings.
  • Students must attend weekly ANSEP recitation/group study sessions.
  • Students must become a student member in a professional society.
  • Students must complete an ANSEP-approved 8-week summer internship related to their degree program with an ANSEP strategic partner.
