When Katherine Sakeagak (left) first became involved with ANSEP three years ago through Middle School Academy, she was already concerned about the challenges that going to college would present. Now, even though she is only a junior in high school, she is confident and prepared for college. As a full-time student at ANSEP Acceleration High School, she is already taking college classes and has earned a number of credits.

ANSEP: Tell us about your first year as a full-time student at ANSEP Acceleration High School.
Katherine: It is really great so far. My dad was part of the first group of ANSEP students, and he brought me around the ANSEP building as a little kid. After doing Acceleration Academy last summer, I knew I wanted to be more involved with ANSEP. Now, it is really cool to follow in his footsteps and be part of the newest ANSEP component.

ANSEP: What are you most excited about this school year?
Katherine: I am taking four college classes this semester. It’s really exciting that I am on track to graduate with more than 36 college credits. Math is definitely my favorite!

ANSEP: What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced at ANSEP Acceleration High School?
Katherine: In addition to earning college credits while in high school, I also play in jazz band, do theatre and compete in science Olympiads. Finding a balance with such a busy schedule has been challenging. ANSEP is helping me develop great time management skills that will prepare me for college and beyond.

ANSEP: How does ANSEP help you overcome the challenges you face trying to learn college-level material as a high school student?
Katherine: Teamwork is very important. It is great to be surrounded by other students with a passion for STEM education and are working towards a shared goal.

ANSEP: What is your favorite thing about being a student at ANSEP Acceleration High School?
Katherine: Each semester at Acceleration High School is equivalent to a full year of high school. I can get a jumpstart on college and save money down the road.

ANSEP: What are your plans for the future?
Katherine: I definitely want to become an engineer but I haven’t picked a specialty yet. Through ANSEP, I have realized there are many different engineering options!

Collectively, ANSEP Acceleration High School students are on track to collectively earn more than 500 college credits during the fall 2017 semester. Acceleration High School has seen a 92 percent success rate for earning college credits and has more than doubled enrollment since its inaugural 2016-2017 school year.
