Marshall Johnson

Dillingham, Alaska

Marshall Johnson was born and raised in Dillingham, where he was a relatively quiet student. Then he found his stride in mathematics. His graduating class was the first in the history of his high school to have a calculus teacher, and what he learned in the class inspired him to continue along the path to a college math degree.

“With math, everything is proven,” Marshall explained enthusiastically. “As long as you accept the base concept, you can prove multiplication, derivatives, everything. That’s what I love about it.”

Marshall’s ANSEP story began at the University of Alaska Southeast while pursuing a degree in mathematics. Today, he is a University Success student and even gives back to the program as a youth peer mentor for the Middle School Academy component. In addition, he encourages others interested in STEM to join ANSEP not only for the professional advancement opportunities, but also for the social aspect.

“ANSEP provided me with the opportunity to make professional connections. I would encourage students, for the entirety of their middle and high school career, to go to ANSEP. It gives you special contacts and the ability to meet your future peers. ANSEP is an amazing program for students pursuing a STEM career,” Marshall said.
