As the very first “ANSEP Gives Back” award recipient, Haley Sundown exemplifies the academic excellence, leadership, service, and community spirit that ANSEP strives to foster, making a meaningful impact through her research accomplishments, dedication to supporting others, and commitment to the ANSEP community.
One of Haley’s most impressive achievements is earning two highly competitive research internships, opportunities that reflect her dedication to her field and her exceptional academic abilities.
In 2025, Haley served as a Catalyst of the Environment Student Researcher at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 in Lyon, France. During her internship, she analyzed ambient air samples for volatile organic compounds using gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The experience gave Haley valuable hands-on research experience while also providing an opportunity to learn about international approaches to scientific research. She participated in conferences and seminars focused on international scientific collaboration, broadening her perspective on the role of research in a global community.
In 2026, Haley continued her research journey as a Summer Undergraduate Research Program intern at Fred Hutch in Seattle. Working under Professor Kim, she gained experience in tissue culture and gene editing while contributing to research focused on curing HIV. Her work earned an award, recognizing the quality and significance of her contributions.
Haley has also made a point of sharing what she has learned with the ANSEP community. Through presentations about her internships and research experiences, she has given other students an opportunity to learn from her journey and gain a better understanding of the possibilities available through research. By sharing both her accomplishments and her experiences, Haley demonstrates what can be achieved through persistence, curiosity, and academic excellence.
Her impact, however, extends well beyond her academic achievements.
Haley consistently demonstrates ANSEP values through leadership, collaboration, mentorship, and service. She has devoted her own time to helping students navigate challenges, offering guidance and sharing her knowledge without seeking recognition in return. Her willingness to support others has made a lasting difference for students throughout the ANSEP community.
Perhaps most importantly, Haley has helped foster a genuine sense of family within ANSEP. She builds meaningful relationships, brings people together, and collaborates generously with students across the community. Her connections with others go beyond brief interactions. She creates an environment where people feel supported, encouraged, and connected.
Haley’s story is a reminder that success is not measured solely by academic accomplishments. It is also reflected in how we use our opportunities to lift others up. Through her research, leadership, humility, and dedication to her peers, Haley represents ANSEP with distinction.
